This course focuses on a critical aspect of the power system: the substation. It covers theoretical principles such as substation configurations, along with an equipment overview incorporating relevant data from your company. Practical aspects including operations, maintenance, and challenges will also be discussed. Students will gain insights into substations and the sophisticated equipment they house.

Course Outline:
• Theory: Bus configurations, grounding principles, transformers, isolation techniques, and general design parameters. • Equipment: Overview of substation components including transformers, isolation devices, overhead lines, under ground cables, voltage control devices, and protection systems. • Operation: Introduction to SCADA/DMS monitoring and control systems, asset management, and maintenance practices. • Problems & Consequences: Analysis of common failure modes (using examples from your company), system restoration procedures, storm hardening strategies, and impacts on the distribution system.
